Richard B. Schwamm, shareholder at Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm P.A., a long-time distinguished law firm, was invited to speak at the Children’s Safety Village’s Water Safety Outreach event on May 1 to discuss water safety and drowning prevention tips
for this summer. Schwamm serves as a board member for the Children’s Safety Village and has been involved with the organization for more than five years.
Schwamm’s presentation focused on frequent causes of child drowning accidents, Florida law and how it applies to homeowner and parental responsibility for supervision of children, safety equipment around the home pool, and the civil liability and lawsuits that can arise from drowning injuries and deaths.
Orange County Mayoral candidate Sheriff Jerry Demings was in attendance at this event and a representative from the Sheriff’s Office also presented to the crowd.
The Safety Village’s mission is to provide education and advocate for the safety of children at home and on the road. With summer vacation quickly approaching, Schwamm shared tips on how we can provide a safe environment for kids and keep the fun rolling this summer.
“We want our kids to be active and enjoy their time off this summer,” said Schwamm. “Drowning, hyperthermia, and dehydration are all too common, especially in the heat of Florida summers. As parents, guardians and protectors, it’s our job to do all that we can to prepare to prevent a tragedy.”
Schwamm has dedicated his practice to advocating for children. In addition to his work with Children’s Safety Village, he was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for Florida’s Children First, a statewide advocacy organization focused on protecting the legal rights of at-risk and foster care children. Additionally, he has spoken to schools about anti-bullying awareness, and has presented on the topic of cyberbullying at the International Child Injury Prevention and Safety Symposium. In his legal practice, Schwamm handles catastrophic injury cases involving families, and particularly, children.
